Pointing accuracy is critical for a satellite communications antenna. AvL’s Zero Backlash Cable Drive technology provides the ultimate in precision and stiffness and is free of backlash. AvL’s geared and jackscrew drives are designed and manufactured for extreme rigidity without slipping or backlash. And AvL’s XY drives are designed and manufactured for continuous tracking and precision signal handoffs from satellite to the next. The positioner used for each antenna is determined by the application.

Cable Drive Resiliency without Backlash

AvL’s Cable Drive positioner was designed for high performance without the weight of geared and other drives. This positioner operates with a maintenance-free dry mechanism in a very wide range of difficult and hazardous conditions without degradation. AvL’s Cable Drive technology is a robust yet simple system that utilizes the averaging effect of many cables wrapped around a drive capstan and an output shaft, with incredible stiffness and no backlash.

Screw Drives

XY Drives

AvL’s XY drives operate antennas for GEO, MEO, LEO and HEO SATCOM. These high-performance drives track moving satellites and manage make-before-break handoffs with AvL engineered harmonic geared drives with an intelligent feedback loop to maintain pointing accuracy and avoid unwanted movement.
